When You Suck At The One Thing You’re Good At

Is “artist’s block” a thing? I think it’s a thing. And it’s the only way to describe how I’ve been feeling these past few weeks. So, unlike the last time there was a huge gap between posts, this time I am sorry. Sorry I haven’t posted new artwork or anything for a while! Minus ten blog points for me.

I’m really going to try not to make this an emo-sadface-poor-me post, but it’s getting a little frustrating.

I’m absolutely no good at a lot of things in life. Math. Sports. Making new friends. Lasting the entire hour at any given aerobics class. Plenty of things. And I’m absolutely fine with that! I’ve made my peace. Lindsay, you’re not an athlete. Nor are you ever going to be a mad scientist who invents the next big must have gizmo. And Linds, you can forget about ever being the most popular kid in school. Not. Gonna. Happen. And Lindsay always replies, “Hey, that’s cool. Let somebody else be that guy, and I’ll be glad for them. I’ve got my own thing going. I’m an ARTIST.” Oh, did I mention I talk to myself? Yeah. …Moving on.

Drawing, painting, and most all of the “arts” have always come fairly naturally to me. It runs in the family. It’s also the thing that makes me happiest in the whole wide world! I love to express myself through art, even if it only makes sense to me. It’s just… well, natural. Except when it isn’t.

I go through these spurts of hating everything I try to create. I’m in one right now. The one real “talent” I have seems to be temporarily out of order. And it pretty much sucks.

To sum up: I’m feeling uninspired.

I’m currently sending out as many good vibes as possible in hopes that the universe will give me a muse. Help me universe!

My Dog Captain

For anyone who doesn’t see me regularly, I wanted to show off my dog, Captain. (Captain Flint, officially) He’s the most cuddly, beautiful, quirky dog ever! All he ever wants to do is be right where we are. We love him. How could you not?! Big and white and mine. No, you can’t have him.

My favorite thing is his golden eyes. They’re very unique and extremely expressive. Not to mention those white eyelashes!

Captain is a Wolf-Dog. Or Wolf Hybrid, as they’re sometimes called. (timber wolf and gray wolf) He’s probably about %20 wolf. (though there isn’t really any way to tell) He’s also got oodles of malemute and husky. Honestly, the percentages don’t matter. He’s just a part of the family. We got him at 3 months old, and he grew and grew!! When standing next to me, his back is about at about my hips. The Captain is really fun to walk; I get lots of double takes. Heh heh heh.

And, lucky for me, he’s only a year old. I get to have him for many years to come.

I made a little Captain video. Because I like visual aids.

The music is “Remy Drives a Linguini” by Michael Giacchino from Ratatouille.

A side note – This is not a breed for beginner dog owners! Or for anyone who is impatient. As wonderful as The Captain is, he’s a lot of work. He needs a lot of attention, discipline, exercise, and loves. So, just in case anyone out there thinks they want one, just do me a favor. Do your research! There are so many different breeds of dog, all wonderful in their own way, and you have to match the breed to your personality and lifestyle. …Ok, sorry. Lecture over.

He’s such a sweet dog. We’re so lucky to have found him! (yay KSL) One day, I’m sure I’ll end up getting a little friend for him. Perhaps a border collie or a golden retriever. Only time will tell!

How about you people? Any dogs, cats, rodents, or reptiles at home? I love them all, so do tell!!

Because Poppy Seeds Are Pretty

Ok, so this is really just a “Hey, check this out” post. This is just one of those small things that make me happy.

As part of my Spring Cleaning, I bought these magnetic spice jars for the side of my fridge. I love them! Everything looks clean, organized, modern. Really easy to get to! It’s such a great idea. The lids have little holes in one place so that you can turn them and sprinkle the right amount. (or you can just pop the lid off and go wild) I got two sets, and I already want two more! It saves a lot of space in the cupboards where they were. Smart and attractive organization is the easiest way to relax me. Aaaaaahhhhhhh…..

I also got these clear labels to stick on the side. Very handy! I can already feel it inspiring me to cook more often.

Just one of many, many things on my list to be more organized this Spring.

Seven Things

Hi there!

I was tagged by Julia to write seven things about myself that you may not know. Ok, I think I can handle that.  So, here goes.

1. I’m Terrible with Pasta

I need a lot more practice cooking noodles and pasta. Somehow, I always get it wrong! There is a magical moment when the noodles are no longer hard but not overdone; I always miss this window. It’s supposed to be the easiest thing! I consider myself a good cook in most other respects. Bah, I’ll get it one of these days.

2. I Learn Lyrics Really Quickly

Back in High School, I was very involved in theater. Trouble was, I could never remember my lines very well. Unless, of course, they were set to music. I can’t memorize a speech or monologue, but something about the way I’m wired makes it very simple for me to remember lyrics to a song. Just let me hear it once or twice, and I’m good. This often happens without my knowledge! I’ll hear a song, and be singing along to it when I suddenly realize that I have no idea when I’ve ever heard this song before. Unfortunately for everyone around me, this means I’ll end up singing songs. Randomly. Out loud. At very inappropriate times.

3. I’ve Never Broken Any Bones

Nope. Not one. And I played just as hard as any other kid growing up. Fell out of my share of trees. Did my share of stupid acrobatic stunts in the park. I remember being jealous of people who had casts in school. All their friends would write on them and it got them a lot of attention. Looking back now, I consider myself lucky! Or… thick boned, at least.

4. I Collect My Little Ponies

I totally love toys. I can remember a lot of favorite stuffed animals and things growing up. Any sort of animal toy was my favorite! But I have a special place in my heart for My Little Pony. I have some of the old school ones, and loads of the newer ones. And I don’t believe in keeping them in the box. They’re meant to be loved! And I do. I love them. Particularly the smell. That pony plastic is intoxicating!

Sadly, however, Hasbro recently decided to change the MLP design once again. I’ve liked the others, but this is just stupid! The new ponies are essentially anime versions of their former selves. Giant heads, big eyes, skinny bodies. Think Bratz dolls, but ponies. It’s quite sad, cause they used to be so cute. I hope the next redesign fixes that! It makes me treasure my older ones even more.

5. I Have Super Hero Tastebuds

I believe the technical term is Hypersensitive Tastebud Syndrome. (HSTBS) Which makes it sound like a bad thing. And I suppose it could be, if you’re not open to new things or are a picky eater. My “case” is actually not a very intense one. I learned that some people are so sensitive they can “taste” lotion on their face!! But for me, all that means is there is a reason I can’t do spicy foods. (Ouch!!) I can taste very mild flavors, and I actually prefer them. They look for folks like me to be wine tasters, cheese checkers, and ice cream testers. Pretty sweet, eh? I should really look into doing that…

6. I Married My High School Sweetheart

Ok, so most of you know that already. The only people who read this blog are people who know me in real life to some degree. Ha ha, hi friends!

I met Weston in jr. high school, actually. We had a lot of the same friends and hobbies. My earliest memories of Wes are from jr. high choir classes. We put on The Mikado by Gilbert and Sullivan, and he had one of the lead roles. So, essentially I remember him wearing a kimono and dying his hair an awful black color. (we all did, it was hilarious) The play is absolutely silly, but man could he sing! That’s what first attracted me to him.

Long story short – we remained friends and eventually dated through most of high school. Five years after graduation we ran off to Hawaii and eloped. That was the best! I’m extremely lucky to have found my best friend so easily. Sorry to get mushy, but I truly love him! Bonus: His family rocks!!

7. I’m Fascinated With Paper

I. Love. Paper. Any kind of paper – Be it the humble notebook, the fancy cotton, or the beautiful tissue variety. I like to feel it, smell it, and just have it. If I have nothing to write, I’ll draw. If I have nothing to draw, I’ll fold. So simple and so useful. Not to mention fun! (Origami, confetti, planes, etc.) I’m not sure where this began, or why it is I love it so, but I do. It’s part of why being an artist is so nice for me. Because, really… this is all just an excuse to buy more paper. Strange? Maybe. But there are worse things to be obsessed with.

Just remember to recycle, kids!

UPDATE:

I almost forgot to tag anyone!! I tag Jenny. Cause I like her face.
